Power Electronics

Power electronics has been greatly transformed, especially after the high voltage semiconductor circuits used in conventional power electronics applications. These semiconductor circuits can provide a wide range of voltages as well as the number of different phases and frequencies with the maximum reliability and minimum electrical losses. Power electronics is an infrastructure technological capability, and in many cases it is used in the heart of many modern industries and consumer applications of consumers; In other words, most electronic systems such as: radio, television, … requires units or departments to provide the required power level and the systems that are in charge of this task are in the power electronics domain. This field has more than $ 40 billion in direct sales, and including indirect sales of power electronic systems used in other domains is $ 570 billion. The history of this field is returned to the design and use of transistors and other semiconductor devices, which has been found for specific uses and has included a lot of backgrounds. About 40 years ago, when the thyristor was invented and marketed as a controllable semiconductor rectifier introduced. Today, the market for this field of electronic has grown significantly. In the 21s century, power electronics have changed dramatically, which implies another; For example, in the past, the use of power electronic systems in applications such as transmission and distribution was high due to the high cost and high costs of these components due to their construction constraints; while, with The advent of the power semiconductors today is economically feasible and has grown rapidly. So far, silicon has been the basis of all the semiconductors, including the power semiconductors. Silicon, due to its electrical properties (such as the failure voltage, threshold voltage, …), creates conditions in which there are limits to the parts made of this material; and in order to overcome these limitations and shortcomings, it was necessary to consider additional costs; but today the basic material of power semiconductors has been changed to silicon carbide, which has led to a dramatic reduction in costs and increased efficiency, also, diamonds and group III nitrites in the Mendeleev Table are alternatives to this issue. The parts made with these materials pass through the voltage and high currents at low cost and low electrical losses, resulting in less cooling. By increasing the efficiency of AC / DC converters, fuel cells, photovoltaic batteries, magnetic storage superconductors, controllable motor drivers, and advanced and intelligent power supplies in this area have entered a new direction, that linking this area to highly innovative technologies. Therefore, this field as one of the research-based application axes with high value added, one of the main activities of the Institute of Microelectronics of Iran is considered.
